"Meeting the Wongs"
In just a few weeks my son JJ will marry Angela Wong, one of the sweetest, prettiest, smartest girls in the world. My wife and I are so excited she is going to become a part of our family - which will make two great daughters-in-law for us. How lucky can we be!
Last weekend we were invited to Durham to meet Angela's parents. They were flying in from Wichita, Kansas and we were driving up from Perry. It was "Meet the Wongs" weekend and we looked forward to it. The only problem was we would be driving up on Memorial Day weekend.
We left Perry about two in the afternoon and started on our trip. Before we got to Atlanta traffic was backed up. I don't know if this was because of an accident (we never saw any indication of one), road construction, or just heavy traffic. Anyway we crept, and I do mean crept, all the way through Atlanta and on the other side until we got to Lawrenceville, Georgia. Then things finally thinned out and we were able to make some time. Still it took us over ten hours to get to Durham.
The Wongs didn't fly in until Saturday so we had a day to ourselves with JJ and Angela. When the Wongs did arrive one of the first things they did was give us a gift bag. In the bag among other items were some tubular cartons and some wrapping tape with a dispenser.
A few weeks ago I wrote about my run in with the local post office when I went to buy a tubular carton. The post office didn't want me to use "their" tape to seal it. Kelli Wong read my rant and decided to bring me the carton and tape as a gift. I loved it. I couldn't have gotten a more perfect gift from them as it showed they read my articles and that they are attuned to my sense of humor.
The weekend went fine. The Wongs took us all to a Chinese restaurant on Saturday night, and I took everyone out to an Italian Restaurant on Sunday afternoon. Now why we went to an Italian Restaurant is beyond me. We aren't Italian. We should have just taken everyone to a southern place such as Ryan's or the Golden Corral. That way we could have chowed down on southern cuisine (we are southern!).
We left on Sunday afternoon to drive back to Perry. I was afraid it would be another driving marathon as it was still Memorial Da7y weekend, but the traffic was light all the way home. It only took us seven hours to make the trip, but it took me a few days to get my body back to normal. That much driving in two days is hard on me.
In July we will make the trip up to Durham again but this time we are spending a few days so it won't be as tiring. Plus we will have the joy and celebration of the wedding to lift our spirits. We will also be able to see the Wongs again. Since we had that weekend together it will be like meeting up with old friends. |
