"Book Em, Dano"

Do you have periods when you watch nothing but good movies or eat nothing but good food? The point I am trying to make is there are times when everything just seems to go right. Okay, I don't mean everything but I do mean certain things. It just seems that sometimes the stars are aligned to create a positive energy in a certain area.

Right now it is me and books. I have been on a reading jag lately and everything I have picked up has been good. I think it started when I received the new book by Dorothy Garlock, LAST TRAIN TO MARIETTA.. I am a big Dorothy Garlock fan and await each one of her novels with anticipation and high expectation. And she doesn't disappoint me. Or at least she hasn't yet.

Dorothy writes about America during the nineteen twenties through forties and she always gets the feel just right. She creates a love situation and usually a crime of some type to involve the romantic couple. So you have a love story, a mystery and a description of life during this era. It is just about a perfect plan and Dorothy always does it with energy and talent.

After Dorothy I moved on to Barbara Delinsky. She has a new novel MORE THAN FRIENDS that takes a look at two couples and how their closeness works against them. It is a relationship novel and has more complexities than you can shake a stick at. And along the way you would like to shake some of the people who get involved in the affairs of the heart and the mind.

The important thing about Delinsky's writing is that she makes you feel you know the people involved in her stories. She goes deep into their souls and lets you see them from the outside in and the inside out. Hey, it works for me. Whenever I read a Delinsky novel I don't want it to end, and that is the sign of a really good author.

Next stop was James Patterson. Now this guy can churn them out in a flash and all of them are readable. I picked up THE FIFTH HORSEMAN and thought it looked like fun. I sat down in my chair and turned on the lamp beside it. Three hours later I got up and the book was completed.

It takes talent to make a book that readable and Patterson, and his co-writers, have that talent.. I don't know anything about Maxine Paetro's writing skills but she is the author who collaborated with Patterson on this novel. How much input she made is unknown to me but I give her just as much credit as him for making this a novel to absorb and enjoy.

Another novel I raced through was Robert K Tanenbaum's FURY. I love this guy's writing and look forward to each new novel he creates. His main character is the New York City DA named Butch Karp. Butch has been in one tough spot after another and his family is usually involved too. Tanenbuam knows these people and if you have read the entire series of novels then you know them too.

Tanenbaum is not the best-known author around but he is one of my favorites. Give him a try, I think you will like him too. And while you are at it pick up John Sandford's DEAD WATCH, Amanda Quick's SECOND SIGHT, and Jeffrey Deaver's COLD MOON.

Like I said, I am on a roll. There are more good books out now than at any other recent time. Find your spot, get a book and plow in. Other worlds and other friends are waiting for you in the pages.
