I’LL WALK ALONE by Mary Higgins Clark

Mary Higgins Clark has been writing suspense novels for some time and her latest I’LL WALK ALONE is proof she can still deliver the goods. Clark has a way of creating characters who come to life on the pages of her books and work their way into the hearts and minds of the readers. There is no way you can read a Clark novel and stay outside the pages of the story. You are absorbed by her plots and mesmerized by the events she creates.

In I’LL WALK ALONE, the main focus of the plot is on Zan Moreland, an interior decorator living in New York City. She is divorced from her husband Ted, and is struggling to build her design business. The great tragedy in her life is the loss of her son Matthew. He was kidnapped when he was only three years old, and two years later Zan is still hopeful for his safe return.

At this time however evidence appears which indicates Zan stole her own son. Even her most ardent supporters now turn against her and Zan even doubts herself. She wonders if she possibly could have done such a thing while in some kind of black out state. If Matthew’s kidnapping was not enough to send her over the edge this latest twist possibly can.

Clark takes this premise and twists it and turns it until the reader doesn’t know which way is up. But at every turn Clark is in control and knows exactly where her story is headed. When it gets to the end there are some unexpected surprises which will please most readers.

Any book about a child’s kidnapping is sure to generate interest but one in which the parent is the main suspect is even more absorbing. Clark takes us into Zan Moreland’s thoughts and lets us know her strengths as well as her fears and doubts. The reader believes that Zan is innocent based on the thoughts that she has, but is she fooling herself as well as everyone else?

Mary Higgins Clark has created a great novel for beach reading. It is enjoyable and fascinating from beginning to end. It will help you pass those hours on the beach and will even put a chill in the air while you are underneath the summer sun. When you are finished with the book you can pass it along to your friends knowing they will be entertained too.

Just because Clark has been writing books for a few decades does not mean her talent has waned. It hasn’t. This new novel is just as fresh and fascinating as was her first book WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?

I’LL WALK ALONE is published by Simon and Schuster. It contains 337 pages and sells for $25.99.
