OBSESSION by Karen Robards
Karen Robards latest novel is a thriller titled OBSESSION. In it she tells a story about a woman on the run from a shadowy group of men who want information from her. The problem is she doesn't know what the information is. As she runs for her life she is subject to a rash of suspicious behavior from everyone she knows and trusts. It is a fast paced book but the plot gets a little bogged down in making everything that happens seem suspicious.
Katherine Lawrence is living in her plush Washington, DC townhouse when she is awakened one night by masked intruders. They tie her up and demand to know where the safe in the house is located. Katherine can't tell them because to her knowledge there is not a safe in the house. The men threaten to kill her but she manages to escape.
The next morning she wakes up in a hospital bruised and frightened. What is even more frightening is that when she looks in the mirror she doesn't recognize herself. Plus her memory is spotty. When she tries to grab on to some memories she develops a severe headache.
Of course there is a handsome stranger named Dan who comes to her rescue. He is a doctor who lives next door. She thinks she should be able to trust him but then she becomes suspicious of him also. He just seems too good to be true.
Robards is a writer who is fun to read, but this time out her plot is so twisting and so devious that it defies belief and sometimes comprehension. Katherine's plight is exciting and thrilling but the explanation of it all, when it arrives, is a bit difficult to swallow.
In order to make the story more palatable Robards ups the volume on the romantic aspects. There is a lot of heat generated by Katherine and Dan and that makes their plight that much more interesting.
Readers will not be bored by this latest Robards' adventure. Too they will like the characters of Katherine and Dan. It is only in the believability of the story that they will find Robards lacking. She just stretches those bounds of believability a little too thin.
If you are a Karen Robards' fan you will not be disappointed. This is not her best effort but an interesting one just the same.
OBSESSION is published by G P Putnam's Sons. It contains 340 pages and sells for $24.95.
