PROOF POSITIVE by Phillip Margolin
There is nothing like a good legal thriller to satisfy the taste of most readers. One of the best such novels around is Phillip Margolin's PROOF POSITIVE. This crafty, clever novel pulls the reader in with the first words on the page and holds that same reader captive until the story ends. In this novel Margolin ponders the questions all of us have about capitol punishment and then gives a scenario where it could be taken to the worst outcome.
The story starts with an attorney named Doug Weaver representing a man on trial for the murder of his mother. The evidence against the man is so overwhelming that Doug convinces him to plead guilty - even though his client maintains to him he is innocent. Weaver thinks his plea will save him form being executed, but it doesn't.
Later Weaver gets a second case. This one involves a Rabbi's son named Jacob Cohen. Jacob has real emotional problems but he forms a strong attachment to Weaver. He sees Weaver as someone who will help him fight the tyrannies of the world. After his case ends Jacob retreats to his fantasy world, but someone wants to harm him and it is not an imaginary being.
When Jacob is charged with murder his family wants noted attorney Amanda Jaffe to represent him. Jacob however wants Weaver, so the two attorneys combine forces. It is well that they do as a man who has sworn to uphold the law is the man who is plotting against Jacob. This man is in a position of trust and has materials at his disposal to make sure that Jacob is convicted.
Margolin weaves this story with surefire suspense and absolute certainty of characters. He keeps the reader guessing as to what will happen next but resolves it all in a satisfactory way. This is sure to keep his fans coming back for more.
