ROUGH AS A COB by Ed Williams
Ed Williams of Juliette, Georgia gained some fame and notoriety as the author of the collection of stories, SEX, DEAD DOGS AND ME. It was also known as "The Juliette Journals." Now he is back with another volume of stories entitled ROUGH AS A COB. It is subtitled "More of the Juliette Journals."
From the outhouse on the cover, you know from the start that this is not going to be some book of genteel southern humor. As Bette Davis once said, "Fasten your seatbelts, boys. It's going to be a bumpy ride." And it is. This collection of stories starts rough and gets rougher. Sprinkled throughout are descriptions of bedroom habits and bathroom manners. There is no in between with Ed Williams. He just tells it like it is and barrels full steam ahead.
Underneath the raw language beats the heart and head of a man who loves his family. In writing about his father and grandfather, Ed Williams lets his heart lead the way. He is so full of admiration and devotion that he is about to burst. The relationship he has with these two men may not be typical but it is the way it is in Ed's world.
Ed is also devoted to the members of the Brotherhood, which is made up of him and his two best friends in the whole wide world. The Brotherhood likes to drink and party. Some of the best times in the book are those spent in the company of these guys.
In the final chapter of the book Ed gets to meet his idols, the members of BTO (Bachman, Turner Overdrive). He has loved their music for years and finally he and the Brotherhood get to go on a road trip and meet the members of the band. It is a dream come true for Ed and one that he shares with you in detail.
Ed Williams is a humorist. He does not claim to be a writer for the masses. He has a distinct audience and they are not the Sunday School crowd. He likes a good time and he likes those people who like a good time. In his world the language may be raw and the actions rawer but that is just how it is.
ROUGH AS A COB is published by River City Publishing. It contains 208 pages and sells for $24.95.
