THE KINGMAKER by Brian Haig
Author Brian Haig is the son of famous military man and politician Alexander Haig, but he is not resting on that laurel. He is an accomplished writer of suspense fiction who peppers his books with sly plots and an abundance of humor. In his latest novel THE KINGMAKER, Haig brings back his popular hero Sean Drummond.
Drummond is a JAG Officer for the Army and is constantly in trouble in one way or another. In this story he has been asked to represent Brigadier General William T Morrison on a charge of treason. The person who asked Drummond to represent him was the General's wife, Mary. Drummond despises Morrison, but Mary was an old flame of his so he doesn't feel he can turn her down.
As Drummond interviews the General he does become convinced of his innocence but it is a hard case to prove. Plus it requires that he go to Russia and get involved in all manner of happenings there. Eventually this daring attorney ends up in situations that threaten his own liberty, freedom and life. Suffice it to say Drummond truly suffers for his client in this story.
The charm of the book lies in the charm of Drummond's personality. He is a cocky type of guy who has self-deprecating thoughts. He also gathers a crew of assistants around him who also add to the charm of the story. His co-counsel on this case is a civilian attorney named Kristina Mazorski. She is formidable to say the least, and bewildering to say the most. As a legal team they act in two separate orbits, but when it comes down to protecting the client they act in unison.
Haig's books get better and better and this one is a gem of a read. You will find yourself laughing through your fears as Drummond goes from one pot of hot water to another, always staying one step ahead of death and disbarment.
For the thrills and for the fun, you will want to read THE KINGMAKER. It is a career maker for Haig and one that should finally get him the attention he deserves from the reading public.
THE KINGMAKER is published by Warner Books. It contains 391 pages and sells for $22.95.
