THE SCARECROW by Michael Connelly

Genius takes many forms and many identities, but in the world of modern literature genius means Michael Connelly. He is a writer of depth, heart and intelligence and his books are written with almost perfect skill. His latest novel, THE SCARECROW, is a prime example of what makes him a great writer.

THE SCARECROW brings back one of Connelly’s most interesting characters. His name is Jack Doyle and he is a reporter for the “LA Times.” At least he is at the start of this book, but shortly into it he gets laid off. He is into his final days at the paper when he discovers a big story just waiting to be told.

The story involves the death of two women, both of whom fit a specific body type. In both cases innocent parties have been accused of their deaths and Jack is determined to get them set free. He enlists the help of Rachel Walling, an FBI Agent with whom Jack has worked in the past.

As they work the case their personal involvement with each other grows, as does the dangers surrounding them. They are up against a predator who uses the technical world of the Internet to locate and destroy his victims. He has the ability to find out details of their lives they don’t think are available to the public, and then he uses this information to plot their deaths.

Connelly blends the technical and the personal perfectly. He heightens the suspense level time after time and makes each action and reaction logical and totally fitting for the story. You get involved with Jack and Rachel and are right there with them as they enter difficult situations while trying to solve the crimes.

There is an entirely different “vibe” to the Jack Doyle stories than that which surrounds the Harry Bosch books, another Michael Connelly creation. Bosch is somewhat moody and mystical whereas Jack is a to the point kind of guy. He charges headfirst into the battle to solve crimes and get the story. Luckily for him Rachel is at his side and watching his back.

If you like mysteries the stories of Michael Connelly are nirvana. They are at the top level and will provide you with a true joy of reading when you enter his world. Luckily Connelly is also a prolific writer and this means we get to enjoy his talent often. For the moment THE SCARECROW is the best book available and one you should get and read as soon as possible.

In the fall of this year the Harry Bosch character will be back in a new Connelly book titled NINE DRAGONS. If it is as good as THE SCARECROW we are in for another superb literary treat.

THE SCARECROW is published by Little, Brown and Company. It contains 419 pages and sells for $27.99.
