In My Humble Opinion

(1) The powers that be at the Academy Awards have decided that this year there will be “Ten Nominees” for Best Picture. The other categories will stay the same but ten pictures will be honored by receiving Best Picture nominations. Supposedly the reasoning behind this will be to let more “popular” movies into the fold.

In the past few years it seemed that art house movies were gaining much of the glory and these type of pictures didn’t really interest the general public. So with the ratings for the Academy Awards sinking a change had to come. Maybe with ten slots open for best picture you can get a “Star Trek” or an “Up” into the competition.

So what do you think? Is this a fair rationale, or is it a ploy that will diminish the value of the “Best Picture” award?

(2) One of the pictures being mentioned as a “Best Picture” possibility is the Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It.” I honestly did like the movie but I hardly think it is Best Picture material. First off it is a movie that is incomplete. It shows all the rehearsals leading up to a concert tour that never happened.

Michael Jackson’s death ended that dream and so the movie is about a process that is leading to a place that never happens. It is the last footage of Michael and for that reason it is worth seeing, but it is still an incomplete film in a lot of ways. Best Picture nominee? I don’t think so.

(3) Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany , Georgia has made three movies – Flywheel, Facing the Giants, and Fireproof. On November 15 they will announce the title of their fourth film. What do you want to bet it starts with an “F”?

Other studios have tried to jump on the “Christian Films” bandwagon but they haven’t matched the success of this Georgia church. Brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick know what needs to go into a film in order to make it entertaining. They also know just where the line is for being preachy about faith. They never cross it.

I have a feeling the next movie is going to be an even bigger success than the first three. They certainly seem to have the momentum going and they are entertainment and business savvy.

(4) Another movie I have high hopes for is “The Blind Side.” Have you seen the trailer to this film starring Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw? The movie is based on a true story and concerns a upper crust family that takes in a homeless student.

If the movie is even half as good as the trailer it will be a hit. I just hope it doesn’t let me down.

  WHAT DO YOU THINK?
