"Heart Land" (TNT)

Treat Williams returns to series TV in the new TNT series "Heart Land." This new series has the makings of a hit because it concerns life and death issues in and around a hospital in Pittsburgh. Inside this hospital are found doctors and nurses who work with donor organs and the recipients. That is a heavy subject mater but it makes for high drama.

Williams plays Dr. Nathaniel Grant, a brilliant doctor but a flawed human being. He is separated from his wife Kate (Kari Matchett) because he was unfaithful to her. He is also semi estranged from his daughter Thea (Gage Golightly) because she knows of his current affair with his nurse Jessica Kivala (Morena Baccarin).

There is still a lot of love brewing between Nat and Kate but it never seems to rise up at the right place or the right time. Both have moved on to other involvements but the memories linger on. Plus they are thrown together constantly at the hospital so it is hard to forget that the other person exists.

The enjoyment of the show comes from the various cases on which the doctors are working. The personal stories of the lead characters are the glue that holds these other stories together. It is a delicate balance but one that works well in this series.

Williams is as strong and dependable in this series as he was in "Everwood." Matchett is a perfect match for him. Dabney Coleman ("9 to 5") appears in the first two episodes as the head doctor that Grant is replacing. He is especially appealing in this role and is a welcome sight for those who have wondered where he has been.

Rockmond Dunbar of "Prison Break" fame joins the cast in the second episode as Grant's replacement, Dr Tom Jonas. He looks to add even more talent to an abundantly talented cast.

If you like medical shows, where the emphasis is on the cases, then you will like "Heart Land." The personal stories don't seem as blatant as those on "Grey's Anatomy" but then this is a different type of show.

Make plans to give "Heart Land" a try. It might turn into one of your favorite shows of the summer. It premieres on TNT, June 18 at 10PM.
