"Ice Spiders" (Sci Fi Channel)

The Sci Fi Channel is offering another original movie this month. It is titled "Ice Spiders" and it is a chance for a reunion for some of the members of the "Melrose Place" cast. Patrick Muldoon, Vanessa Williams and Thomas Calabro have key roles in this cheesy science fiction flick. It isn't a high-class production but it is rather fun in its "giant spiders on a rampage" way.

The movie starts out with two hunters camped out in a snowy wilderness. They can hardly believe their eyes when they see a huge spider crawling across the snow. Although it doesn't look like this spider can move very fast the two men are soon being munched upon.

Down at the ski lodge nearby the ski instructor (Muldoon) is having a conversation with one of the doctors (Williams) who works at a top-secret facility nearby. Later the doctor leaves and goes to the lab where she works. There she finds the staff dead and mutilated by the spiders. As she looks around in horror one of the spiders spies her and attacks. She is able to lock herself in a room and waits until someone shows up to rescue her. Her rescuers are military men whose leader (Calabro) is the one who finds and saves her

Soon everyone knows about the giant spiders and is in a panic. People are dying left and right but the government still wants to keep everything secret. They say the experiments are for the greater good.

The acting in this epic is fair to poor. Muldoon doesn't seem to know exactly who or what his character is supposed to be. The same is true for Williams. Calabro doesn't have enough screen time to make a valid effort. Stephen J Cannell, the writer/producer of hit shows such as "The A Team" makes an appearance as the owner of the resort. He is the best actor in the bunch.

Nothing much happens in the movie but it is fun watching the spiders do their thing. For a light night of entertainment this is enough.

"Ice Spiders" airs on Sci Fi Channel throughout the month. Check your local listings for times.
