"Lake Placid 2" (Sci Fi Channel)
Who knew that the "Lake Placid" movie was such a monster hit that it had to have a sequel! Well obviously it was because a sequel is on the docket for the Sci Fi Channel. John Schneider, Sam McMurray and Cloris Leachman join forces to bring to life another film about giant crocodiles nesting in and around a lake.
John Schneider plays the sheriff of the small community that is next to the lake. When people start disappearing he becomes curious. When people start bringing in body parts he gets alarmed. Finally he and his crew go out on the lake and spot the giant crocodile for themselves.
One of the first persons he turns to for information is an eccentric old lady (Leachman) who lives on property that abuts the lake. She is non-cooperative but the sheriff suspects she knows something about the monster croc, and she does.
A rich hunter (McMurray) flies in to help hunt the croc but he turns out to be more trouble than help. He sees it all as some fun kind of safari and this irritates the sheriff. Still he needs all the help he can get.
Schneider is in full "Dukes of Hazzard" mode. He has his hair long and his aw shucks grin down pat. It is like Bo Duke grew up and became a sheriff. McMurray is solidly obnoxious which is what his role requires.
As for Cloris Leachman, well the question is why does she take this kind of role. She is an Academy Award winning actress and here she is slumming through something like this. She can't need the money that badly.
The special effects in this film are only average and the actors don't really seem too afraid of the crocodile. Still it is a fun way to spend a Saturday night. No harm, no foul.
