"Spotlight 25" (Lifetime)
Lifetime takes a look at women who have reached the age of 25 in the new program "Spotlight 25." Willa Bay hosts this hour of information and directs the questions at a group of twenty five-year-olds, and learns the status of their hopes, their dreams, and their careers. It is a hopeful look at this generation of American women and provides some insight as to what makes them tick.
The group Lifetime has gathered seems to be all of a type. That doesn't mean different ethnic groups aren't included, but all of the women seem to be college educated and moderately affluent. Because of this the information given seems to be lacking in diversity and content. Still the women we meet are interesting, and do have some individuality to them.
Just about all of the members of the group want to "have it all." They want the family and the career. They want the marriage to be happy and the job to be worthwhile. As a group they are "job-hoppers." If they are unhappy in a job they will quit it and move on to something else. They don't have the time or the patience to stay with an employment situation in which they are unhappy or unfulfilled.
This is also the generation of women who link up, hook up or whatever through the Internet. They can have entire relationships of a sort through these electronic means. They text message, use their Blackberrys, e-mail and cell phone their friends constantly. It is the world they live in and it comes naturally to them.
One of the most impressive segments of the program involves a twenty five-year-old named Aynsley. She is a Georgia girl who lives in Atlanta. She has a fiancée' and a good job, but she wants to help make the world a better place. To do this she travels to Africa and works to make a difference. Watching her raise money, risk her job, and leave those she loves is the most impressive story told on this program.
Just to give the show a bit of "celebrity," twenty five-year-old Jennifer Hudson is interviewed. She comes across as a nice young woman but this segment doesn't add much to the overall information or enjoyment of the program.
If all the members of this group had not been so pretty and so educated the picture of the current "Generation Y" member might have had more impact. As is, the show is informative but not particularly enlightening.
"Spotlight 25" premiers on the Lifetime Channel, March 26 at 8PM. |
