"This American Life" (SHOWTIME)

Ira Glass has a very popular program on Chicago Public Radio. It is titled "This American Life" and it is a collection of segments that are pure Americana. Now Glass is bringing his radio show to television and it is being presented on SHOWTIME. The television version is also known as "This American Life" and once again it is pure Americana.

Each week Glass introduces a thirty-minute program that generally is divided into two parts. Each program has a theme and the segments support that theme. The first show of the series is titled "Reality Check" and in this one the realities of life intrude on people's dreams.

Included is a story about a man who has a Brahma Bull he calls Chance. He and his wife keep this bull as a pet and they love it dearly. When the bull dies they are heartbroken at least until they get the idea of having Chance cloned. They get a new bull that they call "Second Chance." They love it too but there is a difference in the two bulls, a big difference.

All of the shows are like this. They are purely unscripted and honest but they show the way life can be when it is real. Glass manages to string these stories together in an interesting way and make them entertaining as well as informative.

People who love "real TV" should love these shows since they feature real people in real situations. Some of them look foolish, some look brave, but all look real - like people you and I would meet in our everyday lives.

So tune into "This American Life" when it premieres on SHOWTIME March 16 at 10:30PM. The late hour is because some of thew shows feature nudity and/or profanity. Try it out. This is a refreshing show with a new take on the world and it all is true Americana from beginning to end.
