“Army Wives” (Lifetime)
On June 8 “Army Wives” begins its second season on Lifetime. This hugely popular show takes up where the last season ended – and that was with a bomb explosion at the “Hump Bar.” Several lead characters were involved in this bombing so this first episode of the new season deals with the aftermath. It gets the new season off to a strong and emotional start.
All of the stars of the show are back this year including Kim Delaney as “Claudia Joy,” Catherine Bell as “Denise,” Sally Pressman as “Roxy,” Brigid Brannagh as “Pamela,” Brian McNamara as “Michael,” Sterling K Brown as “Roland,” Wendy Davis as “Joan,” and Drew Fuller as “Trevor.”
The story takes place on a fictional Army Base in Charleston, South Carolina. All of the characters are either in the Army or associated with it. The plots are not political but are pro-military. They recognize the sacrifices the men and women of the military, as well as their families, make for us.
The lead characters are Michael and Claudia Joy Holden. He is the Base Commander and she is his first lady so to speak. Delaney is such a perfect actress that she draws us into the stories surrounding Claudia Joy with ease. We become a part of her world and see things through her eyes.
Equally good is Catherine Bell. Denise is an Army wife and a nurse. Her storyline was the most dramatic last year as she was abused physically by her teen-age son. This year she is facing life with her husband serving in Iraq.
The acting on this show is uniformly superior to that on other shows. Plus the writing is also at a high level. Once you are drawn into the world of “Army Wives” you find yourself held captive to the impact it levels. If the show is as compelling as last year it will be compulsory viewing each and every week.
So make plans to tune in on June 8 at 10 PM and every Sunday night thereafter for the duration of the season. The networks shows are winding down but shows such as “Army Wives” promise us that summer viewing will be just as good – or better. |
