“Californication” (SHOWTIME)

David Duchovny returns as Hank Moody in the SHOWTIME TV series “Californication.” Duchovny plays a man who loves his ex-wife Karen (Natasha McElhone), who he successfully talked into not marrying her new boyfriend last season. Now they are back together and looking for the “happily ever after” but that scene just doesn’t seem to want to play.

Hank is a writer by profession and a jerk by trade. He is forever making the wrong choices and this ends up hurting Karen and their daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin). But Hank is an optimist and he is forever trying to change. Still with all the women, booze and drugs around him he has too many temptations in his life.

Duchovny plays Hank like he is living the role. He is as natural in the part as breathing. He has that lost soul look and that lost soul air about him. There is nothing heroic about Hank. He is just getting by in a world that constantly trips him up.

McElhone is beautiful and touching as his wife. Still even though Karen is a victim of her love for Hank, she doesn’t provoke as much sympathy as she might if Hank wasn’t so obvious with his shortcomings. Since he is so obvious, Karen’s choice to be with him is not one that draws our pity.

The problem with “Californication” is that everyone in the show is a lewd loser in some way or another. The script is strung with obscenities and the sexual activities are pretty graphic. This show epitomizes what cable television has become – a resting place for the crudest of material.

If you are a David Duchovny fan and you don’t mind the endless profanity, nudity and sexual activities then you might enjoy “Californication.” If not, well this is not the show for you.

“Californication” premieres Sunday, September 28 at 10PM.
