“Chase” (Sci Fi Channel)
“Chase” is a video game come to life and it plays out on the Sci Fi Channel. In this show there are ten players who are on a “game board” while hunters try to eliminate them. If they can survive for sixty minutes they will get the money they have earned but if they are captured within the sixty minutes they get nothing.
There is also a bonus if they survive and find the exit place. Only one can do that (first come, first served) and all of them are trying to get there. Along the way they are given special weapons with which to fight the hunters so they are not completely outnumbered and outarmed.
The ten contestants are a bland group. The only one who stands out is Cleavant and he is so obnoxious that you want him to be eliminated. All the rest are just humdrum types who stir up not the least bit of excitement.
The game itself quickly becomes silly and the fun of the chase evaporates. There is no excitement and no suspense. The winner practically walks to the gate. So where’s the fun in that!
“Chase” ends up being a show that is short on excitement and lacking in entertainment value. Host Trey Farley tries to inject some enthusiasm but he isn’t able to overcome the dullness of the whole premise. The show just doesn’t ever live up to its initial promise.
The only way to watch “Chase” and enjoy it even a little bit is to make fun of the contestants and make smart smarmy comments about their seriousness in playing the game. That way you might get a little bit of enjoyment out of this awkwardly dumb show.
“Chase” premieres on the Sci Fi Channel on Tuesday, November 11 at 10PM. Watch it at your own risk. |
