“Dexter” (SHOWTIME)
“Dexter” is one of those shows that a lot of people talk about but not very many people have seen. It got some extra exposure when CBS showed a “cleaned up” version this year on that network, but its primary home is SHOWTIME and that is where you can get the full effect. Now Michael C Hall and his company of actors are back with the third season of this “dark” show about a serial killer who also works for the cops.
For two years we have seen Dexter Morgan (Hall) work his evil ways on a variety of victims. Last year he was almost caught but one of his police co-workers was framed for the murders and then killed. Now Dexter is back at work and no one is any the wiser about his late night activities.
Dexter is still involved in his relationship with Rita Bennett (Julie Benz). She and her two children are becoming more and more important to Dexter and in his desire to have some normalcy in his life. Circumstances however conspire in the first few episodes of the new season to make Dexter question whether or not there is a future for him with Rita.
New on the scene this year is an ADA named Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits). He actually becomes Dexter’s new best friend. Again this is through circumstances that are original and amazing. You have to see how they evolve in order to understand this meeting of opposites.
Lastly Dexter’s sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) is still driven to get her Detective’s shield. Her tenacity is her best quality and also her worst. She keeps shooting herself in the foot but then will do something brilliant to put herself back in the game.
All of these various stories come together to make “Dexter” a TV series that fascinates and repels you at the same time. It is unique in that it has a killer as its hero, and that is something you don’t usually see.
Michael C Hall is Dexter. He gets inside the character and makes him charming while also being deadly. It is not an easy role to play but Hall does it with confidence and ease. Benz and Carpenter are good support for him and now the addition of Smits promises to be a real plus.
So tune in to SHOWTIME on Sunday, September 28 at 9PM. That is when “Dexter” returns for season number three. Watch it and watch out! |
