“Fringe” (Fox Network)
One of the best new shows of the 2008-2009 television season is “Fringe.” This is a sci fi masterpiece from JJ Abrams of “Lost” fame, and his partners Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci. This is the team that brought us “Alias.”
“Fringe” is also one of the few bona fide hits of the new season. The reason for its success can be laid on Abrams and company’s doorsteps as they are the geniuses behind the concept and the execution of this engrossing series of stories.
The plot concerns an FBI team working on solving a variety of bizarre mysteries. Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is the Agent working these cases and she is helped by the unique scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble), a man who has been locked up in a mental institution.. The only person who can handle Walter is his son Peter (Joshua Jackson) so he is also called in for help.
Week after week Olivia and her crew try to solve the mysterious crimes, and each one indicates there is a far reaching plan to cause chaos and havoc in the world. There seems to be a central group handling it all and that is what Olivia has to find.
To add to the confusion Olivia’s boyfriend and fellow agent John Scott (Mark Valley) has been killed. Before his death Olivia learned he was a traitor and that information was a shock. Now she has begun seeing him and communicating with him. She knows he is dead but she also knows what she sees.
The acting on this show is excellent but the best of the group is John Noble. His portrayal of Walter is amazing. He has all the right moves, all the right looks, all the right actions. Plus he manages to make Walter annoying and endearing at the same time.
Blair Brown is a member of the supporting cast as the strangely remote Nina Sharp. She is the head of a mysterious conglomerate that knows more about the crimes than they are letting on. Brown adds a certain class to the show and gives it a legitimacy it would not otherwise have.
Week in and week out “Fringe” comes up with intriguing and interesting episodes. If you have not been watching, you should. It is not too late to come on board. “Fringe” has the air of otherworldliness that “Lost” has, plus it doesn’t step back from employing the supernatural. That is a great combination in the right hands and “Fringe” is in the right hands.
“Fringe” airs Tuesdays at 9PM on the Fox Network. Join in the fun if you haven’t already. |
