"Greek" (ABC Family Channel)
One of the problems with having a smash hit series like “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” is that all other series on your network will be held to that standard. That does not bode well for “Greek” which is another original series on the ABC Family Channel. Where “Secret” is deep “Greek” is shallow. Where “Secret” has strong acting “Greek” has mediocre talent. And where “Secret” makes an impact “Greek” makes none.
Still it has to be said that this year’s episodes look to be much stronger than last year’s. This time around the show seems to have a semblance of a plot. The characters also seem to have more depth. ZBZ President Casey (Spencer Grammer) seems to be growing a heart. She is even kind to Rebecca (Dilshad Vadsaria) who does some things the sisterhood doesn’t like.
Cappie (Scott Michael Foster) learns the true meaning of Greek Week, and Rusty (Jacob Zachar) learns the cost of friendship. These are pretty serious situations on this lightweight comedy.
Grammer seems to have developed better acting skills this time around but the other members of the cast are still pretty raw. Charisma Carpenter is back as Tegan, a representative of the National ZBZ Sorority. It is always good to see her in any role and she adds some clout to this show. Here’s hoping they expand her part in the plot and keep her around.
For those who only want a light comedy about college life, this is the show to watch. Maybe they will surprise me and sneak in some weightier issues as the season progresses. Here’s hoping.
“Greek” premieres Tuesday, August 26 at 10PM. This new time is better for a show that is more adult than others on the ABC Family Channel. |
