"Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC)
This week will see the airing of the final two episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” for the year. The big question is whether or not viewers will get a “shocker” comparable to the one given to us on “Desperate Housewives.” Did anyone see that “surprise” with Susan coming? “Grey’s” has been leading up to some climactic situations and some of them are bound to be part of these last episodes.
Writer Shonda Rhimes has stated she plans for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) to get back together this year. That hasn’t happened yet so it must be happening this week. But where does that leave Rose, the nurse with whom Derek has been dallying?
Then there is the big question of the relationship between Erica (Brooke Smith) and Callie (Sara Ramirez). Are they pretending to be involved just to get Dr. Mark Sloan’s (Eric Dane) attention? Or did their little joke just lead to something more serious.
Then there is Alex (Justin Chambers). He has a loony girlfriend and commitment issues. Can he help Rebecca (Elizabeth Reaser) get her mind straightened out? And if so will he be with her for the long haul? Plus what about Izzie (Kathleen Heigl)? Is she falling for Alex once again?
For other characters their importance to the show appears to be waning. Does anyone actually care what happens to George (T. R. Knight) these days? He has gone from center stage to waiting in the wings. The same is true of Yang (Christina Oh). She was one of the most important characters in the story and now she just mopes around annoying everyone. When Burke (Isaiah Washington) left the show so did her importance.
If "Grey’s Anatomy” is going to go out with a bang it needs to have some plot contrivance important enough to make us wonder about it until the fall. It can’t be some hokey bomb blast; we have already jumped that shark. It needs to be something about the relationships of all the personnel or at least as many as are feasible. Those who can’t be included need to be sent packing – maybe to “Private Practice.”
Tune in to ABC, Thursday night, May 22 at 9 to see what Rhimes and company have cooked up to send this show off for the summer. Here’s hoping they took a cue form the “Desperate Housewives” game plan and have a doozey in store for us. |
