“Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC)
When “Grey’s Anatomy” returns with fresh episodes in January there might be some changes underway. We have already seen the abrupt departure of Dr. Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) when the public didn’t embrace the Hahn/Torres duet. Now word comes that George O’Malley, (T R Knight) might also be making a quick escape. It seems Mr. Knight thinks his character is just window dressing now.
If George leaves will Izzie Stephens (Katherine Heigl) also jump ship? It has been rumored Heigl wants to star in big screen features and leave the little screen behind. Doesn’t it dawn on her that maybe the screen that made her a star is the place to stay?
It seems that Ellen Pompeo is content to play Meredith Grey until the cows come home, but she has gotten so boring this year that you hope she will leave. And take pretty boy Patrick Dempsey, who plays Dr. Derek Shepherd, with her. These two once made all the right sparks but now they are just an old committed/uncommitted couple who take up valuable air time.
The one potent force on the show remains Christina Yang (Sandra Oh). She has lost none of her crabbiness or her sarcasm. This year a new doctor named Owen Hunter (Kevin McKidd) is on staff and he has Christina’s number. Call it chemistry or call it charisma but Oh manages to make Christina’s relationships the best on the show.
When Christina was involved with surgeon Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) her storyline was the one you didn’t want to miss. After Burke/Washington left the show Christina/Oh didn’t jump into a new relationship right away. She bided her time and when it was right Owen Hunter appeared on the scene. Now their scenes are must watch TV.
One plot twist that has worn out its welcome is the Izzie Denny romance. Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is of course dead but that hasn’t stopped Izzie from taking up with him again. Rumors are that Izzie’s ability to see Denny is due to a health condition – maybe a brain tumor that makes her see “dead people.” Whatever, I hope all is revealed soon because this dating the dead has got to stop.
“Grey’s Anatomy” guru Shonda Rimes has stated all is to be revealed and soon. Plus some new stories will be added to pique our interest. They can’t come soon enough, though even with its flaws “Grey’s Anatomy” is still a better than average show.
And as long as Sandra Oh stays in the cast, I will continue to set my TiVo for Thursday nights at 9. |
