“Leverage” (TNT)

Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton returns to the TV screen in “Leverage,” a new series on TNT. This show is a little like “Mission Impossible” in that it has a head man who takes various jobs to rob from the rich to give to the poor, at least in theory. His team acts out various roles to infiltrate the bad guys and they always have some gimmicks and disguises to make it all happen.

Hutton plays Nathan Ford, a former insurance investigator. He was a company man until his company betrayed him and helped facilitate the death of his son. Now hung over and unhappy he has one last chance to get his life back on track.

Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge) is a computer whiz. He looks and acts nerdy but can deliver when the chips are down. Parker (Beth Reisgraf) is another whiz at a variety of things. She is athletic and agile, but she isn’t normal in any sense of the word. She likes the blowing up of things but she is keeping her urges under control except when they are needed.

Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane) is the muscle of the bunch. He speaks softly but can do damage when required. Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman) is the actress. She can assume any identity and be convincing.

Alec, Parker, Eliot and Sophie make up Nathan’s team. They prefer working alone but realize they can be more successful as a group. In the type of jobs they tackle they need to be at their best and covering each others’ backs.

All of the actors are good in their roles with Kane having the best chance of being the breakout star. He has been on the edge of stardom for years and this series might just do it for him. Hutton is not your typical leading man and Kane might just fill that void.

It will take a few weeks to see if this cast and these stories are going to create a need to watch. TNT already has “The Closer,” “Saving Grace” and “Raising the Bar.” Getting into that exclusive club will be difficult – but possible.

Hutton and company are going to have to pick up the pace to keep from being tossed out before they get a good shot at success.

“Leverage” premieres on TNT, Sunday, December 7 at 10PM. Then all new episodes begin to air on Tuesdays at 10 (beginning December 9).
