“My Boys” (TBS)
“My Boys” returns to TBS for its second season. I watched the two new episodes sent out for review and I still don’t get it. What is it about this show that people enjoy!
It concerns one young woman who hangs out with her brother and four male friends. She has a female best friend who joins them sometimes. This isn’t “Cheers.” It doesn’t even come close. But for some reason people I know and respect love this show.
The main person on the show is PJ (Jordana Spiro). She is a sportswriter living in Chicago who is single and looking. Meanwhile she hangs out with her brother (Jim Gaffigan) and four platonic friends – four male friends! They include Bobby (Kyle Howard), Brendan (Reid Scott), Kenny (Michael Bunin) and Mike (Jamie Kaler). Occasionally her girlfriend Stephanie (Kellee Stewart) joins them.
In the first episode of the new season Stephanie, her boyfriend, PJ and a surprise invitee are going to Europe on vacation. PJ hopes that she and her “secret love” will get romantic in Italy. She has decided her love life has been on hold long enough. Nothing special happens in the episode and when it ends, well it is over.
Nothing happens in any of the episodes and maybe that is the problem. I was never a big fan of “Seinfeld” and this show is a cross between “Seinfeld” and “Cheers.” I do have to say though that Spiro is cute and she is a good actress. I just wish she was in a better show.
Still I will continue to follow this series hoping that one day the charm of it will dawn on me. As I said, many of my friends find it fascinating. I’ve either got to learn to like this show or get new friends.
“My Boys” premieres on TBS, Thursday, June 12 at 9:30PM. |
