“Picture This!” (ABC Family)

One of the hottest young stars in Hollywood today is Ashley Tisdale. The young star of the “High School Musical” Disney movies has garnered a huge following and everything she does is must see viewing. Her latest project is the ABC Family original movie “Picture This!”

Tisdale plays Mandy Gilbert, an eighteen year old high school senior. She has been raised by her widowed father (Kevin Pollack) who is overprotective in the worst way. He buys her a new cell phone for her birthday but uses it as a way to keep track of her. This thwarts her plans to meet up with high school hottie Drew Patterson (Robbie Amell). But Mandy is totally inventive and devises various ways to keep her dad in the dark while she tries to get Drew really interested in her.

She is assisted in all this by her two best friends Alexa (Lauren Collins) and Cayenne (Shenae Grimes). They go along with all her plans and provide backup in all situations. Mandy needs them as she is constantly being sabotaged by her arch-rival Lisa (Cindy Busby).

The theme of this movie seems to be fooling one’s parents and I don’t know how great a message that is for Tisdale’s young fans. Of course her character is eighteen and it is time her father started being somewhat trusting – which also turns out to be a message of the movie.

Tisdale is a delight in the movie. She is cute, innovative and smart. She also has charisma to burn. You can understand why her fans are so adoring. Opposite her Amell is the perfect high school dream guy. He has the face, the body and the semi-shy personality to pull it off.

“Picture This!” is just a series of unfortunate situations from Mandy reacting to a food she ate, to having Lisa cut up her new party dress. These are all minor obstacles in Mandy’s route to Drew but they comprise the fun of the film.

Tisdale and Amell make a winning combination in this cute teen movie. It won’t wow the kids the way “High School musical” did but it will keep kids thirteen and older entertained.

“Picture This!” premieres Sunday, July 13 at 8PM on the ABC Family Channel.
