“Princess” (ABC Family Channel)

Princesses are big in the world of entertainment. Disney has had a slew of them in a variety of animated motion pictures. Then there was this year’s live action hit “Enchanted” which had a princess at the core of its story. So why not have a princess story on TV? Presto, we have “Princess,” an original movie/fairy tale airing on the ABC Family Channel.

Princess Ithaca (Nora Zehetner) is the heroine of this story. She lives in a castle near a city where a couple named Louis and Sophie (Matthew Edison and Mayko Nguyen) live. Not many people have seen her but once a year she does make an appearance for a royal ball. Louis and their houseguest Will (Kip Pardue) decide to go to the ball since Sophie is very pregnant and doesn’t feel like dressing up.

Once there Will meets the princess who mistakes him for a “searcher.” Will goes along with her mistake and they begin to date. Ithaca’s guardian Nana (Deborah Grover) doesn’t approve of this but Ithaca is determined that Will can help her. She is trying to find a young girl who she has only seen in her dreams.

Of course this fairy tale is also a love story so Will and Ithaca do fall in love. But can Will really help Ithaca find the girl who is so important to her kingdom? Also will Will be able to handle the secrets inside the castle? These and many other plot points are resolved in the story.

Zehetner looks and acts the role of the princess perfectly. She has an Anne Hathaway look to her and is regal and refined. Pardue is okay as Will. He doesn’t bring anything extra to the role, and his acting abilities do not allow him to spark it up.

Young girls should love this story and will probably watch it over and over. It has all the fairy tale elements that are necessary to entertain them. For adults, the movie is a bit silly but if you stick with it you might just be captured by its charm.

Zehetner is certainly a good reason to watch this show. She is a real princess come to life. It is too bad she didn’t have a better Prince Charming this time around. Pardue is as bland as she is beautiful.

“Princess” premieres on the ABC Family Channel on Sunday, April 13 at 8PM.
