“Secret Diary of a Call Girl” (SHOWTIME)

Billie Piper stars in the new SHOWTIME series “Secret Diary of a Call Girl.” This show is based on the real life diaries of a high priced prostitute, so it has an authentic touch going for it. The show is set in London and features British actors for the most part. Piper is best known to American audiences from her role in the TV series “Dr. Who”.

Each week the show deals with the adventures and business requirements of the woman who calls herself “Belle.” Her real name is Hannah but she keeps the two areas of her life distinctly separate. Her best friend is Ben (Iddo Goldberg) and he knows nothing about Belle, nor does her family. They are ordinary people who have no inkling their daughter/sister is doing unorthodox things.

Since the film spends a lot of time dealing with Belle and her “job” there is a lot of sexual content in the series. You meet the men who are her appointments and also go to sex parties where she is a participant. Belle enjoys her double life and speaks directly to the camera about it. Some of her comments are funny and some of them are sad, depending on your perspective.

The show is sexy and risqué and shocking in some areas so if that type of entertainment appeals to you, well this is your show. Others may be turned off by the amoral bent of the lead character and the sordidness of the life she leads.

Piper is good in her role but she doesn’t exhibit any extra charm which would draw you to the show. She has got to get more interesting as an actress if viewers are going to want to tune in, and the character has to be more than just shocking if she is going to draw an audience.

”Secret Diary of a Call Girl” airs on SHOWTIME, Monday nights at 10:30 following “Weeds.”
