“The Circuit” (ABC Family)

“The Circuit” is the latest original movie to air on ABC Family. It is a routine romantic drama about a young girl’s efforts to be a NASCAR driver. But even though it is just an average story, it has Michelle Trachtenberg in the lead and it has NASCAR as a backdrop so it will be a big hit.

Kylie Shines (Trachtenberg) is a young woman who has race car driving in her blood. Her estranged father Al (Billy Campbell) is a NASCAR champion. He has not been a part of Kylie’s life since she was a little girl and her aunt has raised her. Now she is racing cars and her career is ascending while his is slowing down.

She gets her big chance when Al is let go by his sponsoring company. Kid Walker (Drew Fuller) is already jockeying for Al’s spot but the owner, Robin Cates (Paul Rae), offers Kylie a chance at it. Later when Cates views her full potential he sets up a charity race between Kylie, her father and Kid Walker. It’s a battle of the sexes and a battle of the generations.

Trachtenberg is enormously popular thanks to her supporting role on “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” and her starring role in Disney’s “Ice Princess.” She is also currently being seen in the CW’s “Gossip Girl.”

Fuller is getting a lot of attention for his co-starring role in the TV series “Army Wives.” He and Trachtenberg have good chemistry together and that adds to the power of the movie.

Some parents may not be so pleased with the content of the movie which has
Trachtenberg’s character plunging into a love affair with Fuller’s. There is also a little bit of profanity included in the film.

The combination of Trachtenberg and NASCAR should be enough to propel this original movie into the winner’s circle for ABC Family. The movie moves quickly and the racing segments are exciting.

“The Circuit” premieres Sunday, June 8 at 8PM on the ABC Family Channel.
