“The Closer” (TNT)
It is hard to believe that “The Closer” has been around for three complete seasons. The TNT drama which stars Kyra Sedgwick is one of the most popular cable series ever. Most of the praise has to be laid at Sedgwick’s feet for she becomes LAPD Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson as soon as she goes in front of the camera. And being her, she becomes one of the most fascinating characters we have seen on the TV screen.
The new season should provide more of the same enjoyable entertainment that we have had for the past three years. Brenda will solve more crimes and her love life will slowly progress. Who knows, she and Fritz (Jon Tenney) may one day get married or even get a new home. For now they are in an apartment where her cat is not the most welcome of guests.
Hopefully we will also get a chance to see more of Brenda’s parents (Barry Corbin and Frances Sternhagen) as they visit from Atlanta. Their interplay with Brenda’s work crew is always a highlight of any show. This couple is so well cast that you can actually see traces of them in the character of Brenda.
The members of Brenda’s staff are all good as a group and individually. When you have actors of the caliber of J K Simmons, G W Bailey, Gina Ravera and Anthony Denison you expect the best from them.
“The Closer” has it all together from the writing to the acting to the photography to the musical score. It all reflects Sedgwick’s determination to put on a good show – and it works.
So get ready to make Monday nights “The Closer” nights, and while you are at it stay tuned for “Saving Grace.” These are shows that feature women as the focal point. They are two different types but they both have personalities that draw you in to them.
