“Tracey Ullman: State of the Union” (SHOWTIME)

Tracey Ullman is one of the most talented comediennes working in television. She is bright, funny and inventive. When she does an impersonation she nails it nine out of ten times. So expectations are high for her new SHOWTIME series “Tracey Ullman: State of the Union.”

In this half hour show she plays a variety of characters. They are all located in a different city and state in the USA. Some of them are supposed to be celebrities while others are supposed to be everyday people. But with Tracey portraying them, they are all special.

Tracey can play a variety of nationalities, a variety of ages, and even a couple of genders. Just wait till you see her David Beckham. Each person she creates is a distinct individual. When she is portraying Dina Lohan, Lindsay’s mother, she even has a different look to her. It’s amazing!

She also does a good Rene’ Zellwegger and a solid Ariana Huffington. I am sure her Linda David is also good but I am not familiar with Linda David’s personality. I didn’t get her Rita Cosby and the things she had her doing were pretty risqué. Call your lawyer, Rita.

What isn’t amazing is the script. The segments are very brief so the writing and comedy have to be quick and sharp. In most of the bits they are not and that is disappointing. No matter how brilliant Tracey is in the acting department if the skits aren’t funny then the show is not as entertaining as it should be.

So if you are only interested in seeing how brilliant an actress Tracey is, tune in to this show each week. But if you want some laughs then you had better tune in elsewhere. I expected more from Tracey in the laughs department but I didn’t get it here.

“Tracey Ullman: State of the Union” premieres on SHOWTIME, Sunday, March 30 at 10PM.
