“True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet” (Lifetime)

Joanna “JoJo” Levesque does her best Lindsay Lohan imitation at the start of her new movie “True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet.” This Lifetime original movie manages to be likeable and enjoyable in spite of that sensationalized title. That has a lot to do with JoJo’s performance and the placing of Valerie Bertinelli in the cast as the voice of wisdom.

Morgan Carter (JoJo) is the latest out of control Hollywood starlet. She drinks too much and parties even more much to the amusement of the paying public and the paparazzi. After one to many incidents Morgan is whisked off to Fort Wayne, Indiana to stay with her Aunt Trudy (Bertinelli). There she changes her look and assumes the name of Claudia Miller.

Claudia’s life consists of high school during the day and AA meetings at night. With Aunt Trudy keeping a close watch things actually begin to settle into an acceptable routine. But how long can Claudia play the role of normal high school girl, and when will the truth about Morgan get out?

JoJo is perfect for this role. She has the looks and the talent to play the messed up starlet, but she also has the inherent sweetness necessary to keep the audience on her side. Bertinelli also has the ability to make Trudy interesting and admirable. These two women manage to keep this film believable and enjoyable from beginning to end. That is quite an accomplishment because on paper it wouldn’t appear to be so appealing.

This movie also gives you a first glance at Shenae Grimes who plays Morgan’s best friend and fellow actress Marissa Dahl. Grimes is one of the young actresses cast in the new CW series “90210.” You are going to be hearing a lot about her in the weeks to come.

Lifetime is mining our insatiable appetite for the “back stories” on the starlets who are making headlines today. The actual truths might not be as easily resolved as the ones shown in this movie but any glimpse we can get is what we want to see.

So for an evening of light but enjoyable entertainment tune into the Lifetime Channel on Saturday, August 9 at 9PM for “True Confessions of a Hollywood a Starlet.” It might not offer “true confessions” per se but it does give a glimpse into the lifestyle of these celebrity darlings.
