“Alice” (SyFy Channel)
It seems there have been as many variations on the “Alice In Wonderland” story as there have been of “A Christmas Carol.” It is time to call a moratorium on both. Hear that Jim Carrey and Tim Burton? Still it is too late to stop the showing of Alice” on the SyFy Channel.
This two night presentation is of a mod wonderland which seems to be something out of the seventies. It takes almost the entire first night’s segment to become acclimated to this strange telling of a strange story to begin with. By the end of the second night you have finally come to appreciate some, not all, of the presentation.
In the film Alice (Caterina Scorsone) is a nice young woman with a nice boyfriend named Jack (Phillip Winchester). One night he proposes and offers her a strange looking ring. She tells him it is too soon for marriage and asks him to leave. When he does she sees him being whisked away by strange men who look dangerous.
Alice follows them and accidentally falls though a looking glass. She awakens in Wonderland where the Queen of Hearts (Kathy Bates) rules. It is a dangerous place but it offers Alice a chance to find her father. He disappeared when she was only a child.
Alice’s allies in Wonderland are a man named Hatter (Andrew Lee Potts) and an older man called the White Knight (Matt Frewer). This White Knight looks like a refuge from a touring company of the play “Man of La Mancha.”
Tim Curry, Colm Meany and Harry Dean Stanton pop up in cameo roles but make little to no impression. Scorsone carries the film on her small shoulders and is a satisfying Alice. Bates sports a British accent which is as ludicrous as her garb.
At two nights the show is a little too long, but you can get some fun from the clever references to the original story. It isn’t one of the best versions of “Alice” but it is a unique one.
“Alice” airs on the SyFy Channel, Sunday and Monday, December 6 and 7 at 9PM each night. |
