“Secret Diary of a Call Girl” (SHOWTIME)
Billie Piper returns as Belle in the SHOWTIME series “Secret Diary of a Call Girl.” This day to day journal of a call girl living in London is back for an eight episode run as its second season. Co-starring in the series are Callum Blue, Iddo Goldberg and Ashley Madekwe. The first season was risqué and adult, and the second season promises more of the same.
Hannah (Piper) is a nice looking young woman living in London. She has a sister and a father who have no idea she is a prostitute by night. So far she has managed to keep her two lives separate. But there is always that fear of being exposed and having to face the music.
This season she meets a doctor named Alex (Blue) who knows only Hannah and not Belle. He wants to date her but Hannah/Belle is afraid of the consequences. She doesn’t want to get involved in a personal relationship in that private area of her life.
Piper is very good as the woman with two lives. She manages to make you like Belle in spite of her profession. She doesn’t make you understand it but you do accept it. Once you get used to it, it loses its shock value and the series becomes just tedious.
The series is going to have to do something to shake things up. There is just too much of the basic premise. We get it already – she’s a call girl! Now let’s have something new.
Both this show and “United States of Tara” which precedes it each week have to have something more than the basic premise. So far they don’t have and this limits their potential longevity.
