“The Bill Engvall Show” (TBS)
“The Bill Engvall Show” is returning to TBS for its third season. The fact this show has survived is a testament to America’s need for clean, family fun in a TV sitcom. Comic Bill Engvall and actress Nancy Travis play Bill and Susan Pearson and they make a compatible couple who audiences feel at home with in a variety of ways.
Bill Pearson (Engvall) is a family counselor and his wife Susan (Travis) is a homemaker. They have three children – Lauren (Jennifer Lawrence), Trent (Graham Patrick Martin) and Bryan (Skyler Gisondo). Lauren is beautiful but a little dumb; Trent is clueless; and Bryan is a nerd.
The Pearson’s have a neighbor played by Bryan-Doyle Murray. He pops into their house from time to time. He is a pain in Bill’s side but a loveable one. Bill’s best friend is Paul, a hair replacement specialist played by Tim Meadows. Paul is constantly at their house and constantly prodding Paul into certain situations in much the way Ethel prodded Lucy.
The shows consist of stories about life in suburbia, be it hard times hitting the family in the checkbook which cancels Lauren’s spring break vacation in Cancun, or a show about Bill asserting his role as the decider in the family. It all is meant for fun and always is solved and wrapped up in thirty minutes.
Engvall is a good comic actor and Travis is a perfect foil for him. Of the three children Martin is a standout as Trent. He makes goofy charming and believable.
Give “The Bill Engvall Show” a try. I think you will like it and it will give you something to watch with the entire family. It is truly G rated.
