“The Closer” (TNT)
“The Closer” begins its fifth season in June on TNT. Kyra Sedgwick and a truly wonderful supporting cast have created one of the best and most popular shows in cable history. Audiences have flocked to these stories about crime in LA and the southern woman who always gets her man/woman/child.
This year Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Sedgwick) is married. She and FBI Agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney) tied the knot in the final show of last season. Now the question is will they have kids. If they do will Brenda’s parents, played by Frances Sternhagen and Barry Corbin, move in as babysitters? We can only hope.
In addition to Tenney, Corbin and Sternhagen all the rest of the supporting cast members will be back. This means the same level of acting expertise will permeate each and every episode. Add that to the superb quality of the scripts and you have a series that is close to perfect.
Sedgwick is the glue that holds the show together. She has truly become Brenda Johnson and each performance she gives is letter perfect. Her accent, the way she turns her head, her obsessive desire for candy; this all adds up to the fascinating character we love to watch.
TNT has introduced some excellent programming in the last few years. “Saving Grace,” “Raising the Bar” and “Leverage” are all shows you should watch. Still it is “The Closer” that is the crown jewel for TNT. It shines the brightest.
