“The Good Wife” (CBS)
Julianna Margulies stars in CBS’ new hit series “The Good Wife.” This is the TV vehicle that has brought her back to stardom. She reached it initially with “ER” but never found success in the movies after she left that series. She made a comeback try with “Canterbury’s Law” and by all rights that show should have been a hit, but wasn’t. Now she has “The Good Wife.” It is a good show and a good fit.
In the show Margulies plays Alicia Florrick, a woman who is married to a former Attorney General for the state. Peter Florrick (Chris Noth) had a grand career going until he got caught cheating. Alicia stood beside him like ‘a good wife” and now she is trying to put the pieces of her life back together.
Peter is in prison and she is working for a law firm. She got the job through her college friendship with one of the partners, Will Gardner (Josh Charles). Alicia knows she has to be twice as good as the others to prove herself and her main competitor is an eager beaver in his twenties named Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry).
The show gets better every week. The cast, which also includes Christine Baranski as a senior partner at the firm, and Archie Panjabi as an investigator for the firm, is getting more cohesive and the various personalities are coming to the fore. The more you learn about these individuals the more you like and understand them.
The main reason the whole thing works is Margulies. She has an every woman quality to her that draws the audience in and makes them pull for her. Peter Florrick may have cheated on Alicia but no one understands why. She is a good lawyer, a good mother, a good wife, and an overall good person. What more could he want!
Tune in to “The Good Wife” every Tuesday night at 10 EST for solid entertainment. Margulies is back and in a show that is worthy of her talent. |
