“The Tudors” (SHOWTIME)
One of the most fascinating series on television this year has been SHOWTIME’s “The Tudors.” This historical drama is now in its third season and seems to get better with each year. It is a stark, sensual, violent look at the reign of Henry VIII and showcases the personal lives of the monarchy and its impact on England and the known world.
Jonathan Rhys Myers is letter perfect as Henry. This season we have seen him in a happy relationship with Jane Seymour (Annabelle Wallis), ands then plunged into despair following her death after their son Edward is born. As the season nears its end Henry is once again looking for the right bride and Anne of Cleves (Josh Stone) comes into his view.
Then there are Henry’s religious views which lead to more persecution and deaths of his people. No one is safe from Henry’s wrath – not men, women or even children. The scenes of the executions which he orders are nauseating, especially one which occurs in the last episode of this season.
“The Tudors” is lushly filmed with all the pomp and pageantry of Henry’s court intact. It has a look and feel to it that few series aspire to and none can match. The show has already been renewed for next year so we will get more of the story of Henry’s life and loves when it returns this fall.
This series is a soap opera to be sure. A lot of time is spent on the romantic foibles of the King. But it is a soap opera that entertains and educates. You will learn the history of this time period in spite of yourself. It just seeps into your brain as you watch Henry barrel through life.
The final episode of season three airs on Sunday, May 24 at 9PM on SHOWTIME. It is an episode full of drama and sudden twists. If it weren’t true it would be hard to believe, but as factual history it is amazing to watch.
Jonathan Rhys Meyer, Joss Stone, James Frain and Max Von Sydow lead a cast of seasoned actors who bring history to life. “The Tudors” is television at its best so be sure to tune in for the final episode. |
