“Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union” (SHOWTIME)
Tracey Ullman returns to SHOWTIME with her second season of “Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union.” This sketch comedy series proves once again that Ullman is the “lady of a thousand faces.” But not only is she a great imitator, she is a classic comedienne.
In show such as this there are bound to be hits and misses. This year she focuses her laser talents on former First Lady Laura Bush. It isn’t a great imitation because mostly she just hones in on her smoking. We all learned about this smoking habit in the film “W” so Ullman needs to give us more.
Her best shots are at Arianna Huffington. This lady she nails. Of course Arianna has the accent and the look to be an easy target, and Ullman mocks them big time. She also throws in some comedic lines that are priceless.
Later in the season there is a skit about Miley Cyrus which is just mean-spirited. It is okay for Ullman to take shots at Daddy Billy Ray, but to mock Miley is not good. She after all is still a kid. The same is true of Dena Lohan. It is okay to take off after her but Ullman should steer clear of making jokes about Lohan’s daughter Allie. She is still too young to be the target of an Ullman mockumentary.
One of my favorite characters in the show is Padma Perkesh, the pharmacy worker. In each skit featuring this woman Ullman takes her into a Bollywood musical number. Now that’s fun and funny
Tracey Ullman is amazingly talented. She can do more faces and characters than anyone else working today. And when she zings someone she zings them good. It is a wonder she has any friends left in Hollywood. I doubt she can invite Celine Dion or Renee Zellwegger to her parties.
If you like Tracey’s brand of fun then tune in to SHOWTIME, April 12 at 10PM for the premiere of the second season of “Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union,” Each week a new half hour of her humor will be shown. |
