“Weeds” (SHOWTIME)

Nancy Botwin and all of her family and friends are back on SHOWTIME with a fifth season of “Weeds.” The widowed lady is still involved sporadically in the growth and distribution of marijuana at least through her sons, Silas and Shane. Audiences have come to know and care about these whacky characters and still tune in to see what outrageous mess Nancy will get into next.

As this season starts Nancy (Mary Louise Parker) is pregnant with the child of Estaban Reyes (Demian Bichir). She reveals this news to him just in time to stop him from killing her. He has been made aware she betrayed him and sicked the Feds on to his drug smuggling ways.

Meanwhile Celia (Elizabeth Perkins) has been abducted by her daughter Quinn (Hayley Hudson) and her boyfriend. They plan to threaten to kill Celia if someone doesn’t pay a ransom. The problem is there are no takers.

All this and more takes place in season five and complications ensue everywhere. At the center stands Nancy, pregnant but unrepentant. Her life is on the verge of exploding and she still marches on as a mother, even making sure her boys have sunscreen on before they go outside for any length of time.

It is difficult to understand why “Weeds” has attracted such a loyal following of fans. The characters are all corrupt in one way or another, and not one single one is totally likeable. Still the show goes on and people tune in every week for the next bombshell.

Parker and Perkins know their characters inside out and are not afraid to make them unlikable. In truth they relish being the “bad” people. Still they always manage to let a little bit of humanity creep in when things are getting really bad.

So if you are a fan then you need to tune in once again to see what the heck Nancy and company are doing. It might be repulsive, or depraved, or disgusting; but it is always unexpected.

“Weeds” airs Monday nights at 10 on SHOWTIME.
