“Caprica” (SyFy Channel)

Truth be told I was not a huge fan of “Battlestar Galactica.” It was enjoyable but for me it was not “must see TV.” So when I learned there was a new show coming to the SyFy Channel that is a prequel to “BG” I wasn’t overly optimistic. Now having watched the first three episodes I am! “Caprica” drew me in from the start and I am now anxiously awaiting each new episode.

The plot concerns two families, the Graystones and the Adamas. By the end of the first episode both families had lost daughters, and Joseph Adama (Esai Morales) has also lost his wife. He is left to raise his eleven year old son William alone, and their relationship is strained to say the least.

The Graystones only had one child and that was Zoe (Alessandra Torresani). She was a brilliant teenager who unbeknownst to her parents had been doing high level work with avatars. Zoe came by her brilliance naturally as her father Daniel (Eric Stoltz) is a giant in the world of science.

In the pilot the audi4ence saw that Zoe was a devoted member of a group recognizing there is only one God. The prevailing religion of the day worships a multi-deity. One of Zoe’s school friends who was a member of this group blew up a metro train on which Zoe was a passenger as well as Adama’s wife and daughter. Daniel and his wife Amanda (Paula Malcomson) were horrified at the news of Zoe’s death, and grieved endlessly for their daughter.

Later Daniel learned through Zoe’s friend Lacy (Magda Apanowicz) that Zoe’s avatar still exited in the cyber world. This led Daniel to attempt to bring the avatar into the real world, a bizarre mission but an understandable one for a grieving father.

There are lots subplots evolving as the story progresses but the main one is the recapture of Zoe and possibly Adama’s daughter through this Cylon process. The story is so well acted and well written that you are totally focused on the plot and the characters. The special effects are just icing on the cake.

If you missed the first pilot episode you can watch it in its entirety at www.syfy.com/caprica. Then you can watch new episodes weekly on Friday nights at 9 on the SyFy Channel.

This is now the best sci-fi show on television and it promises to get better and better. So don’t let it pass you by. Make sure you are there every Friday night or at least your TiVo is.
