“Drop Dead Diva” (Lifetime Television)

One of Lifetime’s most talked about new series last year was “Drop Dead Diva.” This show concerned a glamorous model who died and instead of going to Heaven ended up in the body of a plus sized attorney named Jane. Now Deb, the model, has to learn to live Jane’s life and make the best of it. Oh, and part of Jane’s spirit still lingers to influence Deb in various areas. It’s complicated!

Most of the fun comes from seeing Jane’s body flouncing around like a runway model as she practices law and deals with her friends. These include her assistant Teri (Margaret Cho), her co-worker Grayson (Jackson Hurst), and her guardian angel Fred (Ben Feldman).

The first episode of the second season has Jane meeting up with Judge Paula Abdul (Paula Abdul) which leads into a musical number involving most of the cast. It is fun to watch but it has nothing to do with anything. The rest of this episode has to do with Jane’s trying not to get disbarred while dealing with her surprise ex-husband (Devon Gummersall).

None of this is particularly interesting, at least not for the masses. Brooke Elliott is good in the role of the conflicted Jane but she isn’t outstanding. Neither is anyone else in the cast, not even the usually dynamic Margaret Cho. Every one seems to be just playing a role with no total believability in any of the performances.

Perhaps the show will pick up as the season progresses but based on this initial episode this is a sitcom that is stuck at the mediocrity level. It isn’t the worst you have seen but it certainly isn’t the best.

The second season of “Drop Dead Diva” premieres Sunday, June 6 at 9PM on Lifetime.
