“Eureka” (Syfy Channel)
“Eureka” is back on the Syfy Channel for its fourth season and this year looks to be one of its best. This quirky show about a town that is a little bit out of the ordinary has amassed a solid following over the past few years. Its strength has been in its unique characters and situations while its detractions have been in its silliness. This year the subject matter and the treatment of its lead characters appear to be more serious.
In the first two episodes which I previewed the focus is on the town and how it came to be created. This study of the past leads to a journey back in time to 1947 when the creation of the town was started. It is also there that Dr. Grant (James Callis) was instrumental in bringing it all about. Through a series of flukes most of the major characters in “Eureka” end up back in the past.
The events that occur in the past end up impacting the Eureka of today in a variety of ways. The effects of this impact are what make the season appear to be one we will not want to miss. It is a twist in the plot of the show that is most inventive to say the least.
The cast has grown together as a group over the seasons. Colin Ferguson is the central hero Jack Carter. His best friend Henry Deacon is played by the esteemed actor Joe Morton. Jack’s on again off again love interest is Allison Blake who is played with luscious perfection by Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Comic relief is provided by Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston).
Nothing about the show is predictable this season and the relationships between the lead characters appear to be more serious too. All the quirkiness of the basic plot is still apparent but a touch of more serious drama has been added.
So get ready for a new season of this off beat show. Salli Richardson-Whitfield has never been more appealing. She alone is worth watching the show. Throw in the new addition of James Callis from “Battlestar Galactica” and you have a super cast in a very enjoyable show.
“Eureka” kicks off on Friday, July 9th at 9PM on the Syfy Channel. |
