“HawthoRNe” (TNT)

Fans of Jada Pinkett Smith rejoice! “HawthoRNe” is back for another season on TNT. The popular drama about a Chief of Nursing drew a lot of fans when it debuted last year and the audience this year should be even bigger. The stories that take place in the hospital are compelling as are the personal stories of the staff.

Smith plays Christina Hawthorne who is the Chief of Nursing at a large hospital in the city. As this season’s episodes evolve she moves from this hospital which is closing to another hospital in the same city that has even more financial problems. She is able to take most of her staff with her.

However at the new hospital she soon clashes with the current head of nursing played by Vanessa Bell Calloway. These two women both claim to be in charge and that causes more than a little friction. Of course all of Hawthorne’s friends rally around her.

There is a romance on the show between Hawthorne and Dr. Tom Wakefield (Michael Vartan). Wakefield also transferred from the old hospital so he and Hawthorne have a history. In fact Hawthorne’s recently deceased husband was Tom’s patient and friend. Christina and Tom are taking things slow but it looks like the romance is really going to blossom.

The other romance in the series is between Nurse Ray Stein (David Julian Hirsh) and Nurse Candy Sullivan (Christina Moore). At the start of this year’s episodes she is serving in Afghanistan and he is at the new hospital with Hawthorne. They carry on a long distance relationship with Skype. These circumstances are soon to change.

The main plot points center around the financial condition of the hospital and the work the staff does under the worst of circumstances. Christina becomes the main cheerleader trying to work alongside her staff and also encourage them. She has to battle her bosses and some of her co-workers while maintaining an optimistic outlook.

She also has to keep her personal life in line. She is a single mother of a high school age girl. With her work schedule and other commitments too often she finds there is little time to give to guiding her daughter Camille (Hannah Hodson).

Unlike the lead character in “Nurse Jackie” on SHOWTIME Christina Hawthorne is a great role model. She is a woman who doesn’t do drugs or have adulterous affairs but knows the importance of setting a good example at work and to her daughter.

If she sounds like someone you would like to get to know then tune in to “HawthoRNe” on TNT, Tuesday nights at 9. This season premieres on June 22.
