“In Plain Sight” (The USA Network)

Mary McCormack returns for a new season of her hit series “In Plain Sight” on the USA Network. In this show McCormack plays US Marshall Mary Shannon who is located in Albuquerque, NM. She deals primarily with persons in the Witness Protection Plan and her involvement, both personally and professionally, with those under her care makes up the crux of the show.

At the end of last season Mary was shot and wounded by an unknown assailant, so at the start of this season she is out to find out who was responsible for this attack. She is ably assisted by her partner US Marshall, Marshall Mann (Frederick Weller). How’s that for a tricky name assignment? He feels he did not protect his partner and is operating out of anger and guilt.

The draw of the show is the raw appeal of McCormack’s performance. Mary Shannon is a tough as nails lawman who has some personal issues to sort through. These involve her lover Raphael Ramirez (Christian de la Fuente), her partner Marshall, and her mother Jinx (Lesley Ann Warren). Each of these relationships is complex and confusing and is always causing Mary some sort of grief.

The quality of the supporting cast is the second main draw of the show. De la Fuente, Weller, Warren as well as Paul Ben-Victor as her boss and Nichole Hiltz as her sister add depth and personality to the show. Warren is outstanding as her mother and Weller has grown in appeal as the show has progressed.

“In Plain Sight” can’t match the firepower of “Burn Notice” or the sexiness of “White Collar” but it more than makes up for deficits in those areas with solid acting and involving plots. Plus there are innovative guest turns such as that done by Donnie Wahlberg in the premieres episodes this season, which add to the overall enjoyment of the show.

So for solid entertainment provided by a first rate cast tune into this season of “In Plain Sight.” The season kicks off on March 31 at 10PM on the USA Network.
