“Memphis Beat” (TNT)

Chalk up another winner for TNT. Jason Lee of “My Name Is Earl“ fame comes back with a new series “Memphis Beat” in which he plays a Memphis cop. Not only is Lee great in the lead role but he surrounds himself with an abundance of super talented supporting actors.

In the show he plays Memphis detective Dwight Hendricks. By day he does his police work and by night he is a singer in a Memphis club. He is good at both jobs (but Lee doesn’t do his own singing). He has his own way of doing police work – the Memphis way. This works until he gets a new boss, Lt Tanya Rice (Alfre Woodard). She has her own ideas about how things should be done.

Dwight is divorced and on his own but he still takes care of his widowed momma (Celia Weston). She thinks she can take care of herself but she puts up with Dwight’s attention for the most part.

DJ Qualls plays Davey Sutton, a policeman who looks up to Dwight as the epitome of what he wants to be. He has a long way to go but the road to the future begins with a single step.

Qualls, Weston and Woodard are amazingly good actors who can create a complete character out of a bit of script. Seeing them perform is like attending an acting class. Weston has the perfect comic timing, Woodard has the perfect way with character, and Qualls makes the different stand out.

“Memphis Beat” adds its name to the roster of TNT hits that includes “Leverage,” “Hawthorne,” and “The Closer.” It has that combination of solid talent mixed with a slightly different locale and situation. It should be around for quite a long time.

“Memphis Beat” premieres on TNT, June 22 at 10PM.
