“Mongolian Death Worm” (Syfy Channel)

“Mongolian Death Worm” has to be one of the cheesiest titles ever placed on a movie. Well maybe “The Revenge of the Killer Tomatoes” has it beat, but not by much. Anyway “Mongolian Death Worm” is the name of the Syfy original movie which airs on May 8.

The movie is one of those “so bad it’s fun” type of films. The acting is overdone, the plot is full of holes, and the worms – well I loved those worms! They do live in Mongolia and when their lair is invaded they come out and wreak havoc. They actually slither at about a half mile an hour but no one seems able to get out of their way. They just stand there and get gobbled up in a wormy kind of way.

The hero in the film is a guy named Daniel (Sean Patrick Flanery). He is a seeker of treasure and has spent years looking for Genghis Khan’s tomb. He thinks it is located in Mongolia. He hasn’t quite located it yet but knows eventually he will. In the meantime he is conned into a doing a favor for a friend and takes two “Doctors of Hope” to a village where there is a disease. I never quite caught what the disease is but you get it by drinking the water. Maybe “worms” disease.

The main doctor is a woman named Alicia (Victoria Platt). She thinks the worms are a myth. That is until she sees them slithering with her own eyes. It is up to her and Daniel to kill the worms, save the village, and find the treasure. That’s a pretty tough task but they are up to it.

The other doctor in the film is a guy named Phillip. He is played by Nate Rubin and this guy looks like Seth Green’s shorter and younger brother. He provides comedy relief without even trying. But then so does George Cheung. He plays a Mongolian police official named Timur who looks and acts like a Texas Ranger.

The movie is an “Andrew Stevens Production.” Andrew Stevens is a Hollywood actor whose career hit its peak back in the late seventies and eighties. For a while there he had a good thing going. He was also known as Stella Stevens’ son. She was a sexy blonde actress whose biggest role was in “The Poseidon Adventure.” Anyway Andrew Stevens shows up in a cameo in this film. He comes to a factory and immediately gets eaten by a worm. End of appearance.

Is “Mongolian Death Worm” a good movie? No. But is it a fun movie? Yes. You can invite your friends over and watch it on a Saturday night and enjoy all the wormy things that happen. It may not be the best way to spend a Saturday night but it isn’t the worst.

“Mongolian Death Worm” airs Saturday, May 8 at 9PM on the Syfy Channel.
