“My Boys” (TBS)
“My Boys” returns for another season on TBS. This amusing but low key comedy has developed a loyal audience over its three year run. Now it is back for its fourth summer of episodes. The basic plot is still the same as it concerns a group of friends living in Chicago. The fun comes from the interaction in the group.
The big news for this season is that Andy (Jim Gaffigan), who is also PJ’s (Jordana Spiro) brother, has moved to China. All the rest of the cast is intact including Spiro as PJ, Brendan (Reid Scott), Bobby (Kyle Howard), Kenny (Michael Bunin), Mike (Jamie Kaler) and Stephanie (Kellee Stewart).
With Andy gone, Mike and Brendan are the only two guys not in a relationship. PJ and Bobby are a couple as are Kenny and Stephanie. Since the members of the group are becoming romantically involved it is time for the “boys” to start acting like men, and supposedly that is what this season is going to be all about.
The comedy on this show is not laugh out loud hilarious but rather is a comfortable chuckle now and again. Spiro is still the star of the show and its main attraction. She projects a normalness and a warmth that is totally charming. As her love interest Bobby. Howard is appealing in a puppy dog sort of way.
Gaffigan was one of the best comic actors on the show and he will be missed. It seems that Stewart is being given a bigger role in the show in order to fill that void. The interaction between Stephanie and PJ as best buds was always a strong point on the show.
In truth this fourth season seems to be more of the same, and for many fans of the show that is definitely enough. For others a little more laugh out loud comedy and some stronger storylines would be a big plus.
“My Boys” premieres Sunday, July 25 at 10PM on TBS. For those fans who have been anxiously awaiting its return, this is good new indeed. |
