“Psych” (USA Network)
“Psych” is back for its fourth season on the USA Network. Once again Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and Gus Guster (Dule’ Hill) help the local police department fight crime. Shawn has convinced the police that he is a psychic but in truth he is just an observer of the ordinary. However he can use these observations to make connections to facts that help solve cases. It is very much like “The Mentalist” which came after “Psych” had started its run. Now “Psych” pokes fun at “The Mentalist” every chance it gets.
The best thing about “Psych” is the interplay between Roday and Hill. They have been at this for so long now that their characters have a shorthand way of communicating. Plus the two actors compliment each other greatly with Hill always deferring to Roday to make his character stronger. Roday is the lead and Hill is the supporting actor.
In this show the episodes may involve serious crimes but Roday and Hill always manage to make the situations funny. This requires a constant balance between comedy and drama which they always maintain. The two actors have always been good at presenting the comedy aspects but lately they have been improving in the drama arena too.
What the show lacks is romance. Rachel Leigh Cook was on the show as a love interest for Roday but in the first new episode this year her character left for Uganda. They need to get new lovers for Shawn and Gus, and be quick about it.
If you like adventure and comedy then “Psych” should be a good fit for you. Of all the USA Network’s shows “Psych” is the funniest, especially now that “Monk” has officially retired.
For fun and adventure tune into “Psych” every Wednesday night at 10 on the USA Network. |
