“The Green Room” (SHOWTIME)

If you like comedy, and you aren’t put off by excessive profanity and gross language, then you are going to love the new SHOWTIME series “The Green Room.” This new weekly series is the brainchild of comedian Paul Provenza and he hosts it.

Each week Provenza assembles a group of four or five comedians and they sit in a circle and have a conversation. Quick jokes are told as well as funny stories. There is even some philosophizing on the part of the comics as they discuss highlights and low points of their careers. It is all direct, interesting and for the most part funny.

At the introduction of the first show the door to the comedy club is opened by none other than Jonathan Winters. It is great to see him and to see he is still capable of being truly funny. Hopefully he will join the group in a later episode.

Among the comics you will see in the first few episodes are Andy Dick, Sandra Bernhard, Bob Saget, Larry Miller, Roseanne Barr, Patrice O’Neal, Eddie Izzard and Drew Carey. They all seem to be totally relaxed and the comedy flows freely. The jokes are the high points but the camaraderie also counts.

Provenza moderates it all and manages to give each comic equal time to be observed and heard. Plus he has some funny stories of his own. You get the impression he has hand picked who he wants to be on the show.

So if you like comedy and you want a behind the scenes look at some of your favorite comics then tune in “The Green Room.” It is a relaxed atmosphere where comedy rules and no subject is off limits.

“The Green Room” premieres Thursday night, June 10 at 10:30 on SHOWTIME.
