“Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union” (SHOWTIME)

Tracey Ullman is a four time Emmy winner. That’s right count ‘em 1-2-3-4. She is a comedienne as well as a dramatic actress. She also sings and dances. All of this stands her in good stead in her SHOWTIME series “State of the Union.”

In this thirty minute skit show Tracey plays a variety of roles. Some of them are parodies of celebrities while others are just take-offs on good old average people. Always Ullman has her finger on the pulse of the character she is creating.

In these new shows that starts airing on SHOWTIME this week Ullman skewers Rachel Maddow, Candy Spelling, Bernie Madoff, Arianna Huffington and others. Sometimes the segments are funny, such as her take on Rachel and friends; and sometimes they fall flat, as when they focus on Spelling hiring a new assistant.

It is amazing how Ullman can contort her features and go from attractive woman to ugly man. She also can play an Indian pharmacist as well as an African American airport security inspector. Both of these roles tap into her musical abilities. When she plays Matthew McConaughey she even displays his six pack. You have to see that one to believe it.

There are enough skits in each episode of “State of the Union” that if you don’t like one, just wait a few seconds and a new one will start and it might suit your taste for comedy better. Ullman throws a lot into the mix and most of it pays off.

“Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union” premieres on SHOWTIME, January 25 at 10:30 PM.
